Provides inorganic and organic chemistry knowledge and the technical skills foundation essential for employment as a technician in a variety of chemistry-based professions. Includes analytical instrumentation use.

Prerequisite(s): CHM 101W , CHM 105W  or CHM 111  with a grade of "C" or higher.

  1. Apply the fundamental concepts of chemistry to industrial and process systems
    1. Identify the major groups of chemicals manufactured
    2. Calculate volumes of regular solids including large rectangular, cylindrical, and spherical storage tanks and pipes
    3. Distinguish between specific gravity and density
    4. Distinguish between batch and continuous processes
    5. Perform stoichiometry calculations using flow rates of substances
    6. Identify the limiting factor in a process (amounts of reactant(s), mixing, heat transfer capacity, time)
    7. Distinguish between latent and sensible heat
    8. Explain the function of industrial separation techniques including
      1. Distillation
      2. Liquid-Liquid Extraction

    3. Write IUPAC names and formulas/structures involving halogens and common branches including methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, sec-butyl, tert-butyl, and isobutyl
  4. Apply the concepts of molecular structure to explain the properties of organic compounds
    1. Identify and explain trends in physical properties (including solubility, melting point, and boiling point) based on the molecular structure of molecules
    2. Distinguish between an organic reaction and an inorganic reaction
    3. Describe the relationship of acids, bases, electrophiles and nucleophiles to the reactivity of organic molecules

  5. Demonstrate an understanding of of polymers
    1. Distinguish between natural and synthetic polymers
    2. Represent polymers in terms of their repeating units
    3. Distinguish between addition and condensation polymers
    4. Write formulas for condensation and addition polymers, given the monomer
    5. Identify polymers from their tradenames using standard reference materials
    6. Recognize characteristics of common polymeric materials and thereby classify the polymer into major categories such as polyethylene, polystyrene, polyurethane, silicone polymer, PET, etc.
    7. Demonstrate understanding of the functional characteristics of common polymers
    8. Differentiate between thermoset vs. thermoplastic resins, films and fibers
    9. Recognize the role of polymer properties in determining recycling capability
    10. Recognize the importance and uses of silicone polymers
    11. Discuss the relationship between the structure of synthetic polymers to their natural/biochemical analogs:
      1. Classify carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins according to their structure, function, solubility and composition
      2. Differentiate between carbohydrates, lipids and proteins
      3. Discuss the utility of these monomeric macromolecules in the formation of polymers
      4. Recognize foods that are major sources of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates
  6. Demonstrate Laboratory Skills
    1. Use appropriate safety protocols
      1. Recognize laboratory hazards
      2. Assess risk during laboratory work
      3. Minimize risk during laboratory work by utilizing proper PPE and equipment
      4. Prepare for emergencies by knowing the locations of lab safety equipment including safety shower, eye-wash fountain, fire extinguisher, etc.
    2. Explain terms on a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) including oxidizer, corrosive, and flammable
    3. Use Safety Data Sheets in proper context
      1. Identify chemicals by IUPAC name, tradename, common name, formula, and/or CAS number as appropriate
    4. Use technology associated with a science laboratory including
      1. Construct a graph using a spreadsheet or similar program
      2. Calibrate and use a pH meter
      3. Correctly use and read a digital and analog caliper
    5. Choose proper equipment for a specific task
    6. Discuss calibration of instruments and its importance.
    7. Utilize appropriate sampling techniques
    8. Perform measurements with appropriate devices
    9. Record data or observations
    10. Analyze data or results of an experiment
    11. Use evidence to form conclusions
    12. Make decisions using the scientific method
  7. Communicate effectively using the language of science
    1. Use reference books to locate physical and chemical properties as well as safety information
    2. Use internet search engines to locate chemical information above and also vendor information, career opportunities, and opinions on social issues regarding chemicals
    3. Evaluate the credibility of information retrieved from the internet
    4. Determine the information required to make a chemical decision
    5. Pay close attention to detail and observe trends
    6. Write in the appropriate context including
