MUS 124 - Singer-Songwriter Vocal Techniques

Emphasizes the vocal instrument and how it functions in singing in a popular style. Practices techniquest to improve the voice, rehearsing as a soloist, self-accompanying, and culminating in class performance at the end of the semester. Teaches vocal terminologies, lyric/text setting, and explores a variety of musical styles.

Outcomes and Objectives  

  1. Demonstrate understanding of the vocal instrument.
    1. Recognize the four parts of the voice and their functions in vocal production.
    2. Coordinate physical balance through physical exercises with relaxed natural whole body breathing.
    3. Practice vocal warm-ups to expand range, tonal accuracy, and good articulation for diction.
    4. Demonstrate differences in placement for vowels and consonants.
    5. Develop good vocal health habits.
  2. Demonstrate vocal techniques in performance.
    1. Demonstrate the proper sequence of steps to learning a song.
    2. Participate in solo performances.
    3. Demonstrate song performance in different folk and popular styles.
    4. Demonstrate self-accompaniment on piano, guitar, or other polyphonic instrument.
    5. Demonstrate good rehearsal techniques.
