Outcomes and Objectives  

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of medical gasses, gas delivery devices, and O2 Analyzers.
    1. State the indications for O2 Therapy.
    2. Define the goals for O2 Therapy.
    3. List the hazards of O2 Therapy.
    4. Calculate O2 Content.
    5. State recommended liter flows and concentrations for the following O2 delivery devices:
      1. Simple O2 mask
      2. Cannula
      3. Venturi mask
      4. Partial rebreathing mask
      5. Non-rebreathing mask
      6. Aerosol mask
      7. Face tent
      8. Croupette
      9. Transtracheal catheter
    6. Demonstrate the proper procedure for the setup of the various O2 devices listed above.
    7. Demonstrate proper procedure for checking, inspecting, and correcting malfunctions of the various O2 devices listed above.

    9. Demonstrate proper procedure for assessing:

    14. Explain the principle of operation for the following types of oxygen analyzers:

      3. Electrochemical  (Galvanic and Polarographic)
    15. State any advantages or disadvantages for the oxygen analyzers listed above.
    16. State any hazards of the oxygen analyzers listed above.
    17. Identify the types most commonly used in respiratory care today.

  2. Demonstrate an understanding of O2 storage devices and O2 safety systems.
    1. Describe the principles of operation of the following equipment:
      1. Single-stage regulator
      2. Multi-stage regulator
      3. Compensated flowmeter
    2. Demonstrate safe and appropriate use, monitor, and correct malfunctions of the equipment listed above.
    3. Describe the various safety systems used with regulator, cylinders, and flowmeters.
    4. Calculate duration of flow for the following cylinders:
      1. E
      2. H
      3. K
    5. Demonstrate safe and proper transport of the above-mentioned cylinders.
    6. Demonstrate the proper procedure for shut off of oxygen zone valves.
    7. Demonstrate safe transport of a patient with an appropriate cylinder.

      2. Reserve supply

  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of humidity therapy vs aerosol therapy and the effectiveness of each.
    1. Identify clinical applications for the use of humidity therapy.
    2. Identify and describe the principles of operation of humidity devices.
    3. Describe the principles of operation of various aerosol devices.
    4. Compute entrainment ratios and total output of aerosol devices and relate to patient’s insp. flows.
    5. Describe those factors that affect the penetration and deposition of particles in the tracheobronchial tree.
    6. State the therapeutic particle range of aerosol therapy.
