PTA 121 - Human Development I - Topics in Pediatrics

Credits: 1
Provides theory in and observation of normal and abnormal physical development from birth through adolescence. Prepares the student to perform physical therapy intervention as part of a physical therapist's plan of care, under the direction and supervision of the physical therapist.

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. Discuss motor development from birth to adolescence.
    1. Compare and contrast motor development and behavior through prenatal, infancy, early and late childhood and adolescence.
    2. Define and demonstrate the motor developmental sequence that a normal, healthy infant progresses through.
    3. Recognize the interrelationships of stages of motor development and corresponding reflex activity from birth through adolescence.
    4. Test for problems of abnormal behavior and describe probable causes.
    5. Recognize and name the gross and fine motor milestones and the approximate age when a child reaches the milestone.
  2. Define tests of infant and child development and discuss how they relate to dysfunction at other ages.
    1. Describe specific reflexes and reactions, the positions to elicit them, and the normal responses.
    2. Ascertain the developmental age of an individual through reflex testing.
    3. Discuss the purposes of developmental testing.
    4. Define and perform basic methods of assessment.
    5. Define and discuss overview testing, screen testing, tests of motor function, comprehensive developmental scales, and assessment of functional capabilities.
  3. Demonstrate entry level knowledge of various pediatric orthopedic and neurological disorders.
    1. Define and discuss the etiology and complications related to the following: Down’s Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Myelomeningocele, Cru di Chat, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Ostogenesis Imperfecta, Cystic Fibrosis, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Fragile X Syndrome, JRA, Torticollis, Brachial Plexus Injuries, Autism, Arthrogryposis, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Pediatric TBI, congenital or acquired limb deficiency, developmental coordination disorder
  4. Discuss changes in growth and development from birth through adolescence.
    1. Compare the general aging process from birth through adolescence.
    2. Compare and contrast the differences in the treatment approach for patients from birth through adolescence.
  5. Discuss potential legal and ethical issues pertaining to course content.
    1. Describe an appropriate response to each legal/ethical clinical issues discussed in class.
