DH 210W - Periodontics II

Credits: 2
Provides the opportunity for assessment, documentation, and treatment with pain management of the periodontal patient and to demonstrate ultrasonic scaling, root debridement, planning, and irrigation. 

Prerequisite(s): DH 124B DH 130 DH 131 DH 135 , and LWA 206B  
Corequisite(s): DH 213 DH 214W DH 215 DH 216W , and DH 219W .

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. Assess, document, and identify the need for application and perform different nonsurgical periodontal therapy in the treatment of periodontally involved patients.
    1. Discuss the several supplemental diagnostic tests used in periodontics including the procedural technique and how the tests attempt to identify the presence or risk of periodontal disease.
    2. List and describe the various documentation symbols used in charting a periodontal case.
    3. Evaluate the results of therapy and analysis the need and frequency of PMT, retreatment, and for referral.
    4. Discuss the phases of periodontal treatment planning.
    5. Plan treatment for different case classification, considering lengths and period of treatment time and sequencing.
    6. Identify a file, U.S. furcation insert and 4R/4L instruments, including the following:
      1. Cutting ends
      2. Facial or bevel surfaces
      3. Shank
      4. Working ends for surfaces
      5. Angles for design
    7. State the purposes, uses, and contraindications of the file, U.S. furcation insert and 4R/4L instruments.
    8. Given any file, U.S. furcation insert and 4R/4L instruments, demonstrate its use in the different areas of the mouth. Practice on a typodont progressing to a patient, maintaining:
      1. m.p. grasp
      2. Fulcrum
      3. Wrist rock
      4. Blade adaptation and angle
      5. Shank parallel to long axis of the tooth
      6. Even overlapping vertical strokes
      7. Two-point contact
    9. Demonstrate the correct methods of sharpening files.
    10. Describe/compare/contrast and demonstrate the different instrumentation techniques utilized in accomplishing root debridement and gingival curettage.
  2. Explain the benefits of various site specific and systemic medicants used to treat periodontal diseases, identify patients in need of oral irrigation, and perform oral irrigation.
    1. Explain what is meant by the term SUBSTANTIVITY.
    2. Explain how various medicants affect the oral bacteria.
    3. List the indications and dosages of various medicants.
    4. Assess and design a treatment plan for medicants placement.
    5. Demonstrate the common methods of delivery.
  3. Explain and answer questions throughly about periodontal therapy and post operative home and office care that may be asked by the patient. The student will gain the knowledge needed to perform post operative care.
    1. Discuss the rationale for different periodontal surgical procedures.
    2. Describe the advantages and disadvantages to periodontal surgery.
    3. List the goals for periodontal surgery.
    4. Asses the general considerations for periodontal surgery.
    5. Briefly describe the following surgical procedures; include indications and contraindications, technique and results.
      1. Ginigivoplasty
      2. Gingivectomy
      3. Periodontal flap procedures
      4. Modified Widman, excisional new attachment procedure, or open curettage
      5. Ostectomy and osteoplasty
      6. Guided tissue and osseous regeneration procedures
      7. Procedures to correct mucogingival defects
    6. Describe the steps in healing after surgical procedures.
    7. Discuss post operative procedures and instructions.
    8. Identify the role of the dental hygienist in surgical treatment of periodontal diseases.
  4. Identify and differentiate between the different suture techniques and fibers used in dentistry and be able to remove sutures from the oral cavity.
    1. Summarize the purposes of intraoral sutures.
    2. Explain the two classifications of suture material and why each of them are used.
    3. Describe the suture fiber that is used most often in dentistry.
    4. Explain the code for suture fibers and list the two most common codes of fibers used in dentistry.
    5. Summarize the various suture techniques.
    6. Diagram the two most common suture techniques used in dentistry.
    7. Demonstrate the technique for removing sutures from the oral cavity.
  5. Summarize the importance, the characteristics, and the different types of periodontal dressings. Properly place and remove the various dressings.
