ED 200BW - Exploratory Teaching (Secondary)

Credits: 3
Provides aspiring secondary teachers with experience, study and discussion to enable them to make informed career decisions. Requires at least 90 hours of field work in a secondary school, plus at least 15 hours of seminar. Credit may be earned in ED 200AW  or ED 200BW but not in both.

Prerequisite(s): ENG 111  and ENG 112  with minimum grade of C+ (2.3); COM 112W  or COM 114W  (in accordance with transfer institution requirements) with a minimum grade of C+ (2.3); PSY 211W ; and a minimum of 24 credits with a cumulative 2.5 or higher GPA; minimum of 2 courses in planned secondary teaching major and/or minor with at least a C+ (2.3) in each.

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. Demonstrate both in the course and in fieldwork academic ability in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
    1. Reflect on field experience and readings through regular written and oral response.
    2. Use appropriate written form, grammar, and style.

    5. Address topics appropriate to a pre-service education course.

    1. Punctually adhere to the fieldwork schedule.
    2. Groom and dress appropriately for the field setting.
    3. Complete at least 90 hours of successful fieldwork in an approved K-12 classroom.
    4. Achieve at least a satisfactory evaluation by the mentor.
    5. Communicate effectively with the mentor, school staff, parents, and community.
    6. Develop a respectful working relationship with a mentor, other district professionals, and students.
    7. Show courtesy, sensitivity, confidence, and enthusiasm to mentor, students, parents and faculty.
    8. Support mentor and school staff as directed in curricular and behavior management matters.
    9. Demonstrate interest in extra learning opportunities.
    10. Prepare and complete tasks and projects assigned by the mentor and/or ED 200 instructor promptly and comprehensively.
  3. Demonstrate professionalism in ED 200 seminars.
    1. Observe consistent punctuality and adhere to the ED 200 seminar schedule.
    2. Show leadership in seminar participation.
    3. Respect student confidentiality in speech and writing.
    4. Model intellectual honest and academic integrity.
    5. Show courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to others.
    6. Maintain effective communication with the ED 200 instructor at all times during the semester.
  4. Demonstrate an awareness of and exposure to fundamentals of pedagogy.
    1. Demonstrate beginning knowledge of elements of lesson construction.
    2. Recognize that students differ in learning styles.
    3. Initiate an awareness of special needs students.
    4. Demonstrate a basic understanding of classroom management.
    5. Focus on relevant contemporary educational issues in the community, state, and nation.
    6. Model tolerance in the classroom and promote the importance and value of diversity in the classroom and the world.
  5. Participate in “writing to learn” activities.
