DH 227W - Community Dentistry II

Credits: 1
Provides opportunity for assessment of dental health needs for target populations. Includes design, implementation, and evaluation of dental health improvement programs in non-traditional settings. Evening, weekend, and holiday assignments may be required.

Prerequisite(s): DH 210W , DH 213 , DH 214W , DH 215 , DH 216W  and DH 219W , each with a "C" (2.0) minimum grade.
Corequisite(s): DH 222W , DH 225 , DH 228 , DH 229  and LWA 206C .

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. Understand the similarity and differences from private practice and community health approaces to care of a population. A student will also have a basic understanding of the prcesses through which health policies are developed.
    1. Define health, public health, dental public health and epidemiology.
    2. Compare and contrast the roles and procedures of a private practitioner versus a public health practitioner.
    3. Describe the history and organization of dental public health services.
    4. Identify the issues of community oral health.
    5. Review and define epidemic, endemic and pandemic.

  3. Understand the basic concepts, including technical skills involving planning of a variety dental public health programs. In addition the student will be exposed to the skills necessary to assume the leadership role in their community.
    1. Compile data in the correct way for needs to be presented so that priorities may be seen.
    2. Explain the criteria to construct solutions to the needs.
    3. Discuss the reasons for more than one proposed solution.
    4. Correctly write up a proposal for a health project.
  4. Understand the basic concepts, including technical skills, involving implementation and operation of dental public health programs. In addition the student will be exposed to the skills necessary to assume the leadership role in their community. The student will understand basic technical skills in areas of advocacy building.
    1. Identify and explain solutions to problems that can occur during implementation of different projects.
    2. Review and discuss educational strategies involved in implementation.
  5. Understand the basic concepts, including technical skills such as basic biostatistics, involving evaluation of dental public health programs.
    1. Explain the value of statistics.
    2. Discuss the limits of statistics.
    3. Define mean, median, mode, range, variance, standard deviation, correlation (R value), and statistical significance (p value), T-test, ANOVA, and Chi Square Test according to their characteristics, indications, advantages, limitations, and computations.
    4. Explain the purpose of graphs.
    5. Differentiate among bar graphs, histograms, frequency distribution, and pie diagrams, according to purpose and design.
    6. Explain the characteristics of standard normal curve.
    7. Define positively skewed and negatively skewed.
    8. List the places evaluation takes place; discuss process versus end product evaluation.
    9. Compare and contrast presentation of research results.
