ASEP 153 - Manual Drive Trains and Axles Level 2

Practices the service of manual drive trains and axles. Practices ASE Education Foundation tasks to AST (Automotive Service Technology) level related to manual drive trains and axles. Requires meeting all related GM ASEP training requirements.

Outcomes and Objectives  

1. Diagnose and complete Level 2 ASE Education Foundation tasks as listed below:

A. Research vehicle service information such as fluid type, vehicle service history, service precautions, technical service bulletins, and recalls including vehicles equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

B. Identify manual drive train and axles components and configurations.

C. Retrieve and record DTCs, OBD monitor status, and freeze frame data; clear codes and data when directed.

D. Check fluid condition; check for leaks; determine needed action.

E. Drain and refill manual transmission/transaxle; use proper fluid type per manufacturer specification.

F. Diagnose drive train concerns; determine needed action.

 

I. Clutch related Tasks:

A. Check and adjust clutch master cylinder fluid level; check for leaks; use proper fluid type per manufacturer specification.

B. Diagnose clutch noise, binding, slippage, pulsation, and chatter; determine needed action.

C. Inspect clutch pedal linkage, cables, automatic adjuster mechanisms, brackets, bushings, pivots, and springs; determine needed action.

D. Inspect and/or replace clutch pressure plate assembly, clutch disc, release (throw-out) bearing, linkage, and pilot bearing/bushing (as applicable).

E. Bleed clutch hydraulic system.

F. Inspect flywheel and ring gear for wear and cracks, and discoloration; determine needed action.

G. Measure flywheel runout and crankshaft end play; determine needed action.

H. Describe the operation and service of a system that uses a dual mass flywheel.

II. Transmission/Transaxle related Tasks:

A. Describe the operational characteristics of an electronically controlled manual transmission/transaxle.

B. Inspect, adjust, lubricate, and/or replace shift linkages, brackets, bushings, cables, pivots, and levers.

III. Drive Shaft and Half Shaft, Universal and Constant-Velocity (CV) Joints (Front, Rear, All-wheel, Four-wheel Drive) related Tasks:

A. Inspect and/or remove/replace bearings, hubs, and seals.

B. Inspect and/or service/replace shafts, yokes, boots, and universal/CV joints.

C. Check for leaks at drive assembly and transfer case seals; check vents; check fluid level; use proper fluid type per manufacturer specification.

D. Diagnose constant-velocity (CV) joint noise and vibration concerns; determine needed action.

E. Diagnose universal joint noise and vibration concerns; determine needed action.

F. Check shaft balance and phasing; measure shaft runout; measure and adjust driveline angles; determine needed action.

IV. Differential and Drive Axles related Tasks:

IV.1 Ring and Pinion Gears and Differential Housing Assembly related Tasks:

A. Inspect differential housing; check for leaks; inspect housing vent.

B. Check and adjust differential housing fluid level; use proper fluid type per manufacturer specification.

C. Drain and refill differential housing; using proper fluid type per manufacturer specification.

D. Inspect and replace companion flange and/or pinion seal; measure companion flange runout.

E. Demonstrate knowledge of drive pinion and ring gear service and set up including depth, preload, backlash and gear tooth contact.

IV.2 Drive Axles related Tasks:

A. Inspect and replace drive axle wheel studs.

B. Remove and replace drive axle shafts.

C. Inspect and replace drive axle shaft seals, bearings, and retainers.

V. Four-wheel Drive/All-wheel Drive related Tasks:

A. Identify concerns related to variations in tire circumference and/or final drive ratios.

B. Inspect, adjust, and repair shifting controls (mechanical, electrical, and vacuum), bushings, mounts, levers, and brackets.

C. Inspect axle locking mechanisms; determine needed action(s).

D. Check for leaks at drive assembly and transfer case seals; check vents; check fluid level; use proper fluid type per manufacturer specification.
