DH 225 - Clinical Dental Hygiene IV

Provides the opportunity to perfect dental hygiene skills learned in all previous dental hygiene courses and learn advanced instrumentation skills as well as application of pit and fissure sealants. (15-180)

Prerequisite(s): DH 210W , DH 213 , DH 214W , DH 215 , DH 216W , and DH 219W   each with a "C" (2.0)
Corequisite(s): DH 222W , DH 227W , DH 228 , DH 229 , LWA 206C .

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. Assess the treatment of adult and geriatric patients with moderate to severe periodontal involvement and the treatment of medically compromised patients, with proficiency and effectiveness at the level of an entry level dental hygienist.
    1. Demonstrate patient assessments by methodically collecting, analyzing and documenting oral and systemic data. 
    2. Formulate a summary of health and dental hygiene diagnosis.
  2. Plan the treatment of adult and geriatric patients with moderate to severe periodontal involvement and the treatment of medically compromised patients, with proficiency and effectiveness at the level of an entry level dental hygienist..
    1. Determine goals for the process of care in terms of treatment needs, patient commitment and timeframe.
    2. Analyze risk factors for disease in order to implement the appropriate dental hygiene interventions.  
    3. Utilize critical decision-making skills in evaluating assessment data to create a comprehensive treatment plan. 
  3. Implement the treatment of adult and geriatric patients with moderate to severe periodontal involvement and the treatment of medically compromised patients, with proficiency and effectiveness at the level of an entry level dental hygienist.
    1. Demonstrate communication skills with patients in regard to conditions, needs, treatment and commitment.  
    2. Provide preventative education and therapeutic services to aid patients' achievement of oral health goal(s).   
    3. Update patients’ goals for maintaining oral health. 
    4. Demonstrate effective patient management skills.
  4. Evaluate the treatment of adult and geriatric patients with moderate to severe periodontal involvement and the treatment of medically compromised patients, with proficiency and effectiveness at the level of an entry level dental hygienist.
    1. Evaluate the outcomes of dental hygiene services and modify as needed.
