Emphasizes the study of techniques and philosophies of treating patients with special needs.

Prerequisite(s): DH 120 , DH 121 , DH 122 , DH 123 , DH 123L , DH 124A , DH 125  and LW 206A   each with a C (2.0) minimum grade.

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. Discuss the barriers to healthcare of patients with special needs.
    1. Compare and contrast physical and motivational barriers to caring for a patient with a disability.
    2. Compare and contrast communication, employment, economic, and transportation barriers to caring for a patient with a disability.
    3. Discuss societal attitudes as it relates to barriers to caring for a patient with a disability.
    4. Define disability and give four examples.
    5. Compare and contrast deinstitutionalization and desensitization as the terms relate to patients with disabilities.
    6. Compare and contrast developmental disability, handicap and impairment as the terms relate to patients with disabilities.
    7. Define and explain the significance of the United States Americans with Disabilities Act.
    8. Describe modifications in dental hygiene care as it relates to patients with disabilities.
    9. Discuss ways to optimize appointment scheduling for successful dental hygiene appointments.
    10. Identify ways to make your dental facility a barrier free environment.
    11. Explain the significance of safe wheelchair transfers and assisting with walkers,   crutches, and canes.
    12. Discuss how to stabilize the patient in the dental chair and how to position the        patient for patient safety and good operator ergonomics.

    14. Describe dental biofilm removal, self-care aids, and caregiver instructions.
    15. Describe and discuss preventive measures such as the use of fluorides, pit and fissure sealants, dietary assessment, and counseling.

  2. Utilizing the dental hygiene process of care (ADPIED) apply patient management strategies for the geriatric patient.
    1. Explain the process of aging chronologically and biologically.
    2. Identify the eight general physiologic changes associated with the geriatric patient.
    3. Briefly discuss the characteristics associated with common diseases in the elderly such as sensory impairments, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's, etc.
    4. Describe the general appearance of the following structures: lips, mucous membranes, tongue, salivary and mucous glands.
    5. List the five different characteristics of a geriatric patient’s teeth.
    6. Identify significant aspects of the physical appearance of the aging periodontium.
    7. State the reason the hygienist needs know and understand insecurity in the geriatric patient.

    1. Explain the significance of the Americans with Disabilities Act for the Visually Impaired.
    2. Describe the causes and challenges of visual impairment.
    3. Describe the causes and challenges of hearing impairment.
    4. Explain in lay-person terms different modes of communication to use with a patient who is visually impaired or hearing impaired.
    5. State strategies to develop dental hygiene maintenance and self-care for a patient who is totally blind or partially blind.
    6. State strategies to develop dental hygiene maintenance and self-care for a patient who is hearing impaired.
  4. Describe how to develop dental hygiene care and patient management strategies for patients with a physical disability.
    1. Contrast and compare the characteristics of Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, and Parkinson’s Disease.
    2. Compare and contrast the characteristics of cerebrovascular accident and Bell’s Palsy.
    3. Compare and contrast the characteristics of Myelomeningocele and spinal cord dysfunction and injury.
    4. Compare and contrast the characteristics of muscular dystrophies and Myasthenia Gravis.
    5. Compare and contrast Scleroderma and arthritis.
    6. Compare and contrast the different sensory disorders.
    7. Determine strategies for dental hygiene care and patient management for patients with physical and sensory disabilities.
    8. Using appropriate lay-person terminology, describe how you would teach tooth brushing techniques to a blind patient and also to a partially and/or completely deaf patient.  (Note: Take into consideration the disability and the psychological conditions.)

    1. Compare and contrast mental retardation (M.R.), Down syndrome, and mental illness (M.I.)
    2. Compare and contrast Syndrome of autism, autistic spectrum disorder.

    4. Briefly describe the etiology of mental retardation, developmental or behavioral disorder.
    5. Compare and contrast the differences among the educable (mild), trainable (moderate), dependent (severe), and totally dependent (profound) patient.
    6. Identify and explain the physical and oral characteristics of each level of mental retardation.
    7. Identify oral health problems relative to patients with mental retardation.

    1. Identify and explain the characteristics and behavior of a person with schizophrenia.

    3. Define and describe mood disorders and patient behavior.
    4. Compare and contrast the following disorders anxiety disorders, eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

    7. Discuss appropriate treatment strategies for a mental health emergency.
