PTA 118 - Clinical Seminar I

Studies professional and diversity issues related to clinical practice.  Introduces students to medical documentation and patient/practitioner interaction.  Prepares students to be an engaged member of the Physical Therapy profession.

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the Physical Therapist Assistant Program.
Corequisite(s): PTA 101  , PTA 101LW  , PTA 103  , PTA 110  , PTA 110L  , PTA 121

Outcomes and Objectives
  1. Discuss the application of Universal Precautions when treating patients.
    1. Describe Hepatitis, HIV, Tb, and other blood borne pathogens.
    2. Describe transmission based precautions.
    3. Describe correct hand washing techniques.
    4. Describe Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
    5. Identify correct utilization of PPE.
    6. Define an exposure incident.
    7. Describe appropriate handling of potentially infectious material.
  2. Utilize appropriate medical documentation to thoroughly document all aspects of patient care.
    1. Describe the SOAP note format.
    2. Correctly identify which category medical information is placed in, within the SOAP note.
  3. Prepare for part-time clinical education.     
    1. List three personal clinical goals.
    2. Become familiar with the Clinical Performance Instrument.
    3. Discuss the importance of continuous feedback during the clinical rotation.
    4. Become familiar with all aspects of the assigned clinical site for Clinical Education I.
    5. Complete all clinical site prerequisites.
    6. Discuss student expectations for Clinical Education I
  4. Demonstrate a commitment to professionalism, educational growth, and civic involvement.   
    1. Participate in professional growth activities related to physical therapy.
    2. Participate in civic activities.
    3. Establish a professional involvement portfolio that details the activities.
  5. Discuss relevant legal or ethical issues as well as responses to the issues.
